Complete Practical Guide
How to Apply
From First Touch to Daily Practice
Everything you need to use cow urine, cow dung, ghee, and Panchagavya safely, comfortably, and effectively — with full control over odour, while preserving every bit of their natural healing power.
Section 1
Cow Urine
Key Background
The most valuable active substance in cow urine is urea — it is responsible for almost all therapeutic benefits, yet it is also the source of the smell. Urea itself is odourless; the strong, sharp scent appears only when bacteria break it down into ammonia. Our goal: eliminate the smell, but keep urea fully intact and active.
What Existing Authorities Recommend — and Why We Do It Differently
Well-known authors including Valentin Malakhov, Dr. G. K. Thakkar, and Jagdish R. Bhurani advise using camphor or mint oil to mask odour.
Camphor only masks the smell temporarily — it is harsh, volatile, and fades quickly. Worse: it can speed up bacterial activity, actually accelerating breakdown of urea into ammonia.
Mint / Peppermint is too light and "cool" to cut through heavy ammonia-based odours. It does not stop urea from breaking down. Our recommendations eliminate odour completely, stop the reaction that creates smell, and fully preserve urea and all healing properties.
Top 5 Essential Oils — Ranked by Effectiveness
Lemongrass
2–3 drops per 100 ml
Best overall: strong, fresh, citrus-woody scent. Contains citral, which kills bacteria, neutralises ammonia chemically, and stops the enzyme that breaks down urea. 100% safe, preserves all potency.
Cedarwood(Himalayan / Atlas / Virginian)
1–2 drops per 100 ml
Deep, warm, woody, very long-lasting. Heavy molecules form a protective barrier, slow evaporation, lock in active ingredients, and permanently bind odour molecules.
Thyme(White / Red)
1–2 drops per 100 ml
Powerful antibacterial and deodorising action. Very effective at neutralising heavy organic smells; gentle enough not to alter active compounds.
Oregano
1 drop per 100 ml
Extremely strong antimicrobial; cuts through ammonia and earthy odours instantly. Use slightly less — very potent.
Tea Tree
2–3 drops per 100 ml
Balanced, reliable, fresh-medicinal scent. Neutralises odour well and protects the chemical stability of the urine.
Important: These exact same oils and dosages work perfectly for cow dung as well. The same principles apply — they neutralise odour, stop bacterial activity, and preserve the active substances.
✅ Best Blend: Lemongrass + Cedarwood
Recommended ratio: 2 drops Lemongrass + 1 drop Cedarwood per 100 ml
- Lemongrass = active protection: kills bacteria, neutralises ammonia, stops breakdown of urea.
- Cedarwood = long-term stability: locks everything in, holds scent for hours, prevents evaporation or degradation.
- Together: zero smell, 100% potency, and a pleasant, clean, fresh-woody aroma.
Storage & Shelf Life
- Preparation: Add your chosen oil(s) first, swirl gently — do not shake vigorously.
- Container: Store in a dark, sealed glass jar or bottle, away from heat and sunlight.
- Shelf Life: Cow urine does not spoil quickly — it actually matures and improves over time. It remains fully effective for at least 1 year, and many sources confirm it can keep its properties for several years when stored properly. The recommended essential oils further extend stability.
How to Apply Cow Urine
- Apply to clean skin — face, neck, chest, arms, legs, or the whole body.
- Massage gently until fully absorbed or almost dry.
- You may leave it on or rinse with water after 15–30 minutes, depending on your preference.
- No soap is needed — water only if you wish to wash it off.
Section 2
Cow Dung
Sourcing — What to Look For
Fresh dung from cows fed a clean, natural diet is always best. Organic dung from traditional Indian breeds such as Gir or Sahiwal has a naturally mild, earthy, pleasant scent. Dung from standard dairy breeds may carry a stronger odour, yet it remains fully effective.
Always collect fresh deposits, never old or aged piles. For the greatest spiritual and energetic potency, source it from places where cows are treated with love, care, and deep respect — such as Hindu temples or traditional goshalas.
Shelf Life & Storage
Fresh cow dung retains its full quality for roughly one month at room temperature. Store it in a small lidded jar or plastic container. Only a tiny amount is needed — a 100–300 mg portion is enough for 2–3 weeks.
Replace with fresh dung every 2–3 weeks for best results.
Clothing
Dry cow dung will not stain fabric, but fresh, wet material can leave marks. These wash out easily, but for regular practice, wear long-sleeved garments and dark-coloured underwear or pyjamas. Wool is ideal — both in winter and summer — it naturally regulates body temperature, helps manage odours, and leaves the skin feeling exceptionally comfortable.
The Smell — Complete Solutions
Method 1: Let the Dung Dry on the Skin
Once dry, cow dung has almost no scent at all. Drying alone resolves 70–100% of the issue.
- Leave it until fully dry — Apply, massage in, and wait until it dries completely.
- Speed it up with a hairdryer — Shortens drying time considerably.
- Cover immediately with clothing — Your body heat dries it in 5–15 minutes. The fabric traps any odour while wet, and once dry, no further scent is produced.
Method 2: Use Essential Oils — Recommended
Add 2–5 drops of essential oil to the dung before applying — this eliminates odour completely.
Use the same Top 5 oils and dosages from the Cow Urine section above. Best choice: Lemongrass + Cedarwood blend.
Method 3: Apply a Clay Top Layer
A thin layer of clay over the dung creates a perfect seal, blocking all odour molecules. Gopi Chandan Tilak — the pure organic clay used by Krishna devotees — sourced from the banks of the River Ganga and naturally infused with sandalwood, is smooth, easy to apply, soothing to the skin, and has a gentle, pleasant fragrance.
Application Methods
Basic Application: Apply and Wash Off
Apply a small amount of fresh dung to your skin — about the size of half a walnut. Rub between your palms first, then spread lightly over the skin. Massage gently for 5–15 minutes.
Rinse off with water only — do not use soap — leaving a thin, active layer to work through the night. Best done in the evening before sleep.
The first benefits you will notice are improved mood, easier breathing, and deeper, more vivid dreams — these appear first.
Extended Application: Apply and Leave On
Apply a thin layer, then immediately put on your dedicated dark cotton underwear or pyjamas. Within 5–15 minutes the dung dries, and any remaining odour disappears. Wash garments every 3–4 days.
You do not need thick layers. A thin coating is enough. Regularity of use matters far more than thickness.
Shared Bathrooms — Managing the Brief Window
The only time any scent might be noticed is during the few minutes of application. Apply the dung in your bedroom and rinse off in the bathroom later. A quick spray of room fragrance afterwards covers any trace completely.
If you add the recommended essential oils, you will avoid this issue entirely.
The first time you hold fresh cow dung, you may feel a moment of resistance. That is not your body reacting — it is social conditioning. Once you experience the benefits, any hesitation will vanish completely.
Section 3
Combined Application
Cow Urine + Cow Dung
Using both together gives you the full synergy of their healing properties. Always add your chosen essential oils to the urine and/or dung first, before mixing or applying.
Method 1: Layered Application
- Prepare: Add essential oils to the cow urine in advance.
- First layer: Apply cow urine to the skin and massage thoroughly until almost dry — leave it slightly damp. This wetness acts as a natural carrier, making it easier to spread the dung.
- Second layer: Apply a thin coat of cow dung directly over the slightly damp urine layer. Spread evenly.
- Seal: Once the dung is starting to dry, apply a fine layer of Gopi Chandan Tilak clay over the top. This seals everything in and leaves the skin feeling smooth and fresh.
Method 2: Mixed Application
- Prepare: Add essential oils to the cow urine first.
- Mix: Combine fresh cow urine and cow dung in a small container and stir until you have a smooth, consistent paste.
- Apply: Massage the mixture onto your skin in a thin, even layer.
- Dry: Continue massaging or let it air dry until almost dry.
- Seal: Finish with a light layer of Gopi Chandan Tilak clay on top.
Both methods are highly effective — choose whichever feels more comfortable or convenient for you.
Section 4
Cow Ghee
Ghee is known in Ayurveda as the “carrier of potency” — it nourishes, protects, and helps other active substances absorb more deeply. Safe, gentle, and suitable for all ages and skin types.
Internal Use
- Daily nourishment: Start with ½ to 1 teaspoon taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, or added to warm water, herbal tea, or warm milk. Balances digestion, supports gut health, and provides steady energy.
- Cooking: Use as your main cooking fat. High smoke point — does not break down or form harmful compounds when heated. Adds a rich, gentle flavour.
- General note: Ghee is highly concentrated — small amounts work best. 1–2 teaspoons per day is usually enough for most people.
Abhyanga — Full-Body Massage
- Warm a small amount of ghee gently in a cup or your palms until it turns liquid.
- Apply all over the body: use long, smooth strokes on arms and legs, and soft circular motions on joints, chest, and abdomen.
- Leave it on for 15 to 30 minutes — this gives it time to absorb and soften the skin.
- Rinse off with warm water. You can use a mild, natural cleanser if you wish, or simply wipe away excess with a warm cloth.
- Best done in the morning or evening; it leaves you feeling relaxed, warm, and grounded.
Medicated Ghee
Herbs are slowly simmered in ghee over low heat until their active compounds transfer fully into the fat. This creates a preparation that is far more potent, longer-lasting, and easier to absorb than herbs taken alone.
Storage & Shelf Life
Keep in a clean, dry, sealed glass jar, away from direct sunlight and heat. When pure and properly made, ghee remains stable for 6–12 months at room temperature, and can last for several years in a cool, dark place. It actually matures and improves with age.
Section 5
Panchagavya Application
Panchagavya is a complete preparation combining all five cow products. Correct preparation and maturation are essential.
Traditional Preparation
The most widely accepted traditional ratio:
Cow Dung
5 parts
Cow Urine
5 parts
Cow Milk
2 parts
Curd
2 parts
Ghee
1 part
Method
- Mix all ingredients in a clean glass or earthenware jar.
- Add essential oils: 2–3 drops Lemongrass + 1–2 drops Cedarwood per 100 ml total volume.
- Stir gently once or twice daily.
- Cover loosely — do not seal airtight completely, as natural fermentation occurs.
- Leave in a cool, shaded place for 7 to 14 days to mature.
- Once matured, seal and store. Remains effective for many months to over a year.
Topical Application
- As a paste: Take a small amount of matured Panchagavya, apply a thin layer over the skin, and massage gently. Leave for 15–30 minutes, then rinse with warm water only.
- As a compress: Dilute 1 part Panchagavya with 3–4 parts clean water. Soak a cloth and apply to the area of need.
- Sealing: For longer application, finish with a light layer of Gopi Chandan Tilak clay to lock in all benefits.
Internal Use — Traditional only
- Only use fully matured preparations — never take fresh, unfermented mixtures internally.
- Start very small: Begin with 1 teaspoon per day on an empty stomach, mixed with warm water or honey if desired.
- Cautious approach: This is a traditional practice, not a medical treatment. Consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner if you have existing health conditions.
- Essential note: The recommended oils are safe for internal use only if they are pure, food-grade quality — otherwise, omit them from batches intended for drinking.
Storage & Shelf Life
Keep in a clean, dark glass jar, sealed tightly once fully matured. Store in a cool, dark place. When prepared correctly, Panchagavya improves with age and remains stable and effective for up to 1–2 years.
